Descriptive Memorandum on the Purpose and Areas of Activity of Foundation DaST

"Foundation DaST – Design a Sustainable Tomorrow arises from the vision and life trajectory of its mentor, Pierre Frédéric Coustols, whose journey, initiated in 1978 in south-west France, has been distinguished by the regeneration of rural and urban communities and landscapes across different parts of the world."

1. Framework and Legal Nature

Foundation DaST – Design a Sustainable Tomorrow arises from the vision and life trajectory of its mentor, Pierre Frédéric Coustols, whose journey, initiated in 1978 in south-west France, has been distinguished by the regeneration of rural and urban communities and landscapes across different parts of the world.

The foundation is a private, non-profit legal entity, established by Pierre Frédéric Coustols and Maria Mendonça Coustols, with an indefinite duration. The Foundation operates in accordance with applicable legislation, its Articles of Association, its Internal Regulations, and all other regulations and codes of conduct duly approved.

2. Purpose of Foundation DaST

Foundation DaST’s primary mission is to promote the revitalisation and sustainability of neglected communities and landscapes through a holistic approach integrating cultural and natural heritage, urban and rural regeneration, and social and economic development.

The Foundation’s activities are guided by the creation of synergies between local communities, multidisciplinary specialists, institutions and students from around the world, transforming each project into a space for practical learning and intercultural and interdisciplinary exchange.

The Foundation aims not only to benefit directly the communities in which it operates, but also to create case studies and replicable sources of inspiration adaptable to diverse global contexts, promoting a legacy of sustainable growth, resilience and social and environmental balance.

In accordance with paragraph 2 of Article 3 of the Framework Law on Foundations, the Foundation’s mission falls within the following areas of public interest:

  • Preservation of historical, artistic and cultural heritage;
  • Promotion of culture and the arts;
  • Promotion of social and community integration;
  • Scientific research and technological development;
  • Promotion of European and international dialogue;
  • Promotion of entrepreneurship, innovation and social and economic development;
  • Protection of the environment and natural heritage.
3. Areas of Activity

Foundation DaST develops its work based on the following strategic pillars:

a) Regeneration and Conservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage

  • Development of rehabilitation and conservation projects for natural and cultural spaces;
  • Promotion of innovative practices for sustainable urban and rural regeneration;
  • Enhancement of traditional techniques and the intangible heritage of local communities.

b) Sustainable Development and Post-Growth Economy

  • Support for alternative economic models focused on sustainability and community well-being;
  • Encouragement of sustainable entrepreneurship and circular economy practices;
  • Promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and responsible tourism.

c) Research and Community Awareness

  • Establishment of strategic partnerships with universities and research centres;
  • Development of capacity-building and awareness programmes on heritage and sustainability;
  • Organisation of scientific and cultural events promoting active societal participation.
4. Commitment to Sustainability

Foundation DaST adopts an integrated and collaborative approach to addressing global challenges, promoting locally rooted solutions that are replicable across different cultural and geographical contexts.

The Foundation’s projects encompass environmental conservation, urban regeneration, the promotion of intercultural dialogue and the development of alternative economic models, always ensuring the active involvement of local communities and the creation of educational opportunities for students and specialists.

With a holistic and long-term vision, Foundation DaST is committed to building a legacy of responsibility, innovation and balance, ensuring that future generations may continue to benefit from enriched and resilient cultural and natural heritage.

5. Financial Viability

Foundation DaST ensures its financial sustainability through a structured and sustainable funding model, detailed in its Activity Plan, which includes its own resources, donations, public and private grants, and strategic partnerships. This approach guarantees the continuity and long-term impact of its projects.

6. Networks of Collaboration and Partnerships

Although Foundation DaST is currently undergoing formal recognition, it intends to continue the collaborative networks developed by its Founders since 2023, notably through the personal project “Convento da Terra”, involving institutions, specialists and the local community.

The Founders aim to transition this personal initiative into an institutional project, thereby enabling the formalisation of new strategic and academic partnerships to strengthen its projects and maximise the impact of its activities.
