Memories of the Rice of Sado

Artistic Residency by Diogo Bento

On 14 March at 4.30pm, Espaço Convento da Terra AQUI, in Torrão, will host the public presentation of the artistic research project Memories of Rice in the Sado, developed by researcher and resident artist Diogo Bento.

This session proposes an open conversation about the history of rice cultivation in the Sado Valley and the memories that remain, or have been lost, around this past.

Between Local History and International Debate

Starting from the international debate known as Black Rice, which highlights the role of African communities in the development of rice cultivation techniques, this presentation seeks to connect that discussion with the historical reality of the Sado.

Historical records indicate the presence of African populations in the region between the 15th and 18th centuries. What do we know today about this history? Which memories continue to circulate? Which narratives have yet to be told?

Art as a Form of Research

The event forms part of an ongoing artistic research project developed within a doctoral programme at Universidade Lusófona.

Using photography as a method of listening, documentation and reflection on the territory, the project combines landscape recording, archival research and visual experimentation. Its aim is to bring these questions into the present and to create a space for shared reflection.

An Invitation to the Community

More than a formal presentation, this session seeks to foster dialogue.

Members of the local community are invited to share memories, family stories, references or knowledge connected to rice cultivation and the history of the region.
